You can reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes. Type 1 diabetes cannot be prevented. But around 3 in 5 cases of Type 2 diabetes can be delayed or prevented by making simple changes in our everyday lives.

How can I reduce my risk?

Some of the risk factors for Type 2 diabetes – such as age, ethnic background, or family history – can’t be changed, but others can. The good news is that we can all make small changes to help us reduce our risk of developing Type 2 diabetes.

NHS Diabetes Prevention Programme

The NHS National Diabetes Prevention Programme is being rolled out across England for people at high risk of developing Type 2 diabetes. This is a collaboration between NHS England, Public Health England, and Diabetes UK. It provides tailored help to reduce your risk of Type 2 diabetes, including education on healthy eating, help to lose weight, and physical exercise programmes. You can find out if this is available in your area on the NHS England website.
